Barbara arrived at the farm before Alex. Her brothers had accompanied her as they thought being driven in a pony cart would be good fun.

‘Are we staying for lunch, Babs?’ David tugged at her coat, impatient for a reply.

‘Yes, we are. Here come the boys. Do you think you four could unharness Silver for me and then put her in a box? Make sure she’s got water and hay.’

Tom answered for his brother: ‘Of course we can. Joe showed us yesterday and it’s a piece of cake.’

She left the children to look after her mare and headed to the back door, surprised Mrs Everton hadn’t been waving at her kitchen window as she usually was. The two collie dogs were also absent, but Mr Everton was probably working somewhere on the farm, so they would be with him.

‘Hello, Mrs Everton, it’s me, Barbara. Shall I come in?’

‘I’m on the phone,’ Mrs Everton called back. ‘It’s Valerie. I won’t be a minute. Make yourself at home in the kitchen.’

Barbara hooked off her boots and hung her coat on a spare peg then dashed into the kitchen as the corridor was freezing, the cold seeping through her socks. She glanced at the clock ticking loudly on the windowsill – Alex should be here soon. Had he told his mother about the baby? If she was honest she would much rather not tell the Evertons. Let them think the baby was conceived after they were married. They must already think she was a bit flighty after almost being engaged to two men at the same time, and knowing she and Alex had slept together might put them off her altogether.

‘Well I never! You won’t believe the excitement that’s been going on in Hornchurch.’ Barbara rather thought she knew exactly what the drama was about. ‘There’s policemen all over the countryside, my Valerie says, and Mr Williams has been arrested. I don’t suppose you’ll want to be living there now.’

‘Actually, Mrs Everton, the thieves hid some of the stolen goods in the attic at the dower house and the rest in the stables. Alex was the one who informed the police.’

‘Good heavens! Imagine that! I can’t believe someone as grand as Mr Williams is a crook. His poor wife and daughter – they must be feeling dreadful.’

‘Clarissa has a weak heart. I hope the shock doesn’t prove too much for her. She’s a really nice girl and I’m hoping to become her friend.’ Barbara took the mug of tea Mrs Everton held out and sat down at the scrubbed kitchen table. ‘If the police have captured everybody, and taken everything out of our house and the stables, then I’m quite happy to live there as planned. I expect that’s what Alex wants to talk about.’

An hour later there had been no phone call from him and he still hadn’t arrived. Mr Everton came in from the fields expecting his lunch, which meant Alex was going to miss his meal, unless he arrived very soon.

Dusk was falling.
